Charged Plate Analyzers
It once was that there were as many " charged plate analyzers " as there
were ionization systems. Prior to standardization, it was easy to create a test device which could favor one ionization system over another. Here as in any evaluation regarding static electricity, the equation Q = C V comes into play. Capacitance and voltage are inversely proportional. If we analyze an ionization source with a plate capacitance of 200pf and read 10volts, we will read 1000volts using a 2pf plate.
To even the field, the ESD Association
developed Standard 3.1 which called for a plate size of 6" x 6" and a total capacitance of 20pf. This standard is an ionization standard and is the most common usage of charged plate analyzers.
But did you know that this same device is a tremendous training and educational tool ? It can be used to graphically demonstrate various static
phenomena, such as induction charging, voltage suppression, difference of potential, triboelectric charging, and
electrostatic fields. It can also be used to evaluate table and floor mats, conductive flooring finishes, smocks, finger cots and gloves, tote boxes, wrist straps, and more.
